Understanding HbA1c: The 3-Month Average That Defines Your Diabetes Control

Most people with diabetes track their fasting sugar every morning — but a single reading only shows one moment in time. HbA1c gives a much bigger picture, and it's the number your doctor relies on most to judge how well your diabetes is controlled.

What HbA1c actually measures

HbA1c reflects the average amount of glucose attached to your red blood cells over the past two to three months. Because red blood cells live about 90 days, this test smooths out the daily ups and downs and shows your true long-term trend — something a one-off finger-prick simply cannot.

Why it matters more than daily readings

You can have a normal fasting sugar and still have a high HbA1c if your levels spike after meals or overnight. That's why two patients with the same morning reading can have very different HbA1c results. It's the single best predictor of long-term complications affecting the eyes, kidneys, nerves and heart.

What your target should be

For most adults with diabetes, a target below 7% is reasonable, though the exact goal is individual — older patients or those with other conditions may have a slightly higher target for safety. Your personal number should always be decided together with your physician.

How often to test

If your diabetes is stable and well controlled, HbA1c every six months is usually enough. If we've recently changed your treatment or your control is not yet where we want it, testing every three months helps us respond quickly.
